Engineering Manager- Data Collection & Scanning

Censys  ·  Remote (US/Canada)

About the role

Leads the Data Collection team at Censys, which builds and runs the systems that discover, scan and gather the internet data behind the Censys Internet Map and the company's customer products. The team mixes Scanner Engineers and Distributed Systems Engineers working on high-performance network scanning, protocol implementation, scan orchestration and real-time pipelines.

This manager owns the team's people leadership, technical roadmap, delivery and operational health, working with Product, Research, Security and Infrastructure to decide where to invest. Progress is measured in the coverage, freshness, accuracy and cost of the data, so the job is as much about metrics for scan execution, pipeline health and protocol coverage as about people. The manager guides architecture across scanning, ingestion and APIs, sets standards for testing, rollout safety and observability, keeps on-call sustainable, and turns research work into production capabilities where it makes sense.

The company wants three years of engineering management or team leadership, a background as a software or systems engineer on production systems, and strong knowledge of distributed systems and networking, including TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP and TLS. Experience with streaming services, ingestion pipelines or high-throughput APIs and with running critical systems in production is expected. Internet-scale scanning, GCP, Kafka or Pub/Sub, and a background in cybersecurity, threat intelligence or security research would stand out. The role is remote across the continental US, with possible in-person onboarding at the Ann Arbor headquarters.
