Sr. Engineering Manager, Analytics and Applied AI
Illumio · HQ - Sunnyvale (Office)
About the role
Leads a group of backend engineers, along with their leads and managers, building the cloud services and AI capabilities behind Illumio's Zero Trust Segmentation platform. The role sits in Engineering at the Sunnyvale headquarters.
The senior manager sets technical strategy for distributed systems, platform APIs and AI-enabled services, and defines the architecture for large microservice and event-driven applications running across AWS, Azure and GCP. They help shape the company's AI roadmap, from agentic workflows and LLM integrations to retrieval-augmented generation and the infrastructure underneath, and set standards for reliability, observability, scalability and security. Quarterly planning, staffing, roadmaps and architecture reviews fall to this role, along with mentoring managers and senior engineers and working with product, security, infrastructure and data science teams.
The posting asks for ten or more years building scalable backend systems and at least three leading engineering teams and their leads or managers, with Java, Go or Python, Kubernetes and Kafka-style event-driven systems. A working grasp of modern AI systems is expected: LLMs, agents, RAG, model serving, prompt engineering and agent orchestration. Experience running AI platform or ML infrastructure teams, vector databases, model evaluation, Terraform and a cybersecurity background are pluses. The job is on site five days a week, and offers depend on US export-control eligibility.
